Leaf Recycling Program

PROGRAM DETAILS

The City of Southlake, in partnership with Keep Southlake Beautiful and Duncan Disposal, is pleased to offer Southlake's curbside leaf recycling program.  The Leaf Recycling Program gives citizens the opportunity to place their bagged leaves on the curb and have them picked up for recycling rather than ending up in the landfill. During the 2009 Leaf Recycling Program, Southlake residents put green in their routine, exceeding expectations. Through the course of the program, Southlake residents bagged and recycled 170 tons of leaves!

It is important to participate in this program because the leaves that accumulate in and around a landscape represent a valuable natural resource that can be used to provide landscaped areas with a good source of organic matter and nutrients.

To participate:

  • Place bagged leaves at the curb no later than 7:00 a.m. on designated collection days.
  • Bagged leaves should be placed at the curb physically separated from other solid waste.
  • Any type of bag may be used.

DID YOU KNOW . . .

During the year, at least 20% of the solid waste generated by Texans comes from grass clipping, tree leaves and other landscape wastes. Of the landscape waste, approximately half is composed of tree leaves.

Bagging leaves and placing them into the curbside garbage collection system uses valuable landfill space, removes nutrients from the environment and costs cities and the people of Texas more in increased taxes and service fees. The tree leaves that accumulate in and around a landscape represents a valuable natural resource that can be used to provide a good source of organic matter and nutrients for use in a landscape.

Leaves contain 50 - 80% of the nutrients a plant extracts from the soil and air during the growing season. In forests, pastures and other natural settings, tree leaves and other organic wastes from a natural carpet over the soil surface which conserves moisture, moderates temperature and prevents soil erosion and crusting.
