There are many areas to volunteer with the City of Southlake. Some of the more common volunteer jobs are:

Office / Clerical Assistant

Time: Assignment time for volunteers will vary by department and assignment.

Description: Volunteers will file, type, alphabetize, shred documents, research, scan documents, copy, collate, fold, stuff envelopes and perform other clerical support duties as assigned. Training will be provided as needed.

Qualifications: Volunteers must be able to accurately follow oral and written instructions, communicate effectively with a diverse population, and understand proper protocol for handling sensitive or confidential information.

Requirements: Minimum age is 16 years old. Computer experience is preferred but not required. Prior secretarial or office experience is preferred, but not required.

Physical Demands: Assignment may require lifting up to 10 pounds occasionally or negligible weights frequently and volunteers must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend, squat, push and pull.

Environmental Conditions: Volunteerswill work inside in an office environment.

Library Assistant

Time: Assignment times for volunteers are scheduled during normal Library operating hours. Volunteer assignments are scheduled in two hourblocks and volunteers are limited to one shift per day.

Description: Volunteers will shelve library materials, file, type, alphabetize, shred documents, research, scan documents, copy, collate, fold, stuff envelopes and perform other clerical support duties as assigned. Training will be provided as needed.

Qualifications: Volunteers must be able to file in alpha-numerical order, accurately follow oral and written instructions, communicate effectively with a diverse population, have good organizational skills and be dependable.

Requirements: Minimum age is 12 years old. Computer experience is preferred but not required. This volunteer assignment requires a criminal background check.

Physical Demands: Assignment may require lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible weights constantly and volunteers must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend, squat, climb ladders and step stools, push and pull.

Environmental Conditions: Volunteer work is predominately indoors in a library setting with moderate traffic and distractions in the immediate area. Occasional assistance with outdoor programs may be necessary.

Special Events Volunteer
Parks & Recreation

Location: Assignment location will vary depending upon the special event.

Time: Assignment times for volunteers will vary depending upon the special event.

Description: Volunteers will assist with event set-up and take down, participate with arts and crafts at booths, interact and distribute information to the public, clean up after events, monitor City equipment, and monitor event entry and exit points. Training will be provided as needed.

Qualifications: Volunteers must be friendly and dependable,able toaccurately follow oral and written instructions, able to readily learn assign tasks, and able to communicate effectively with a diverse population and large crowds.

Requirements: Minimum age is 16 years old.This volunteer assignment requires a criminal background check.

Physical Demands: Assignment may require lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible weights constantly and volunteers must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend, squat, climb ladders and step stools, push and pull.

Environmental Conditions: Volunteer work is predominately conducted outdoors and is subject to inclement weather. Exposure to large crowds at events is likely.

Coach (Basketball, Flag Football, Volleyball, etc)
Parks & Recreation

Location: Assignment location will vary depending upon the sport.

Time: Coaches are required to participate in 1 hours of practice during the week plus games on Saturday. A tournament is held at the end of the season.

Description: Coaches will teach, direct and train youth regarding the rules and skills necessary to play a sport, plan and coordinate practices, coach weekly games, coach an end of season tournament, and encourage youth during practice and play.

Qualifications: Volunteers must be able to communicate effectively with parents and children ages 6 - 16 and must be friendly and able to manage intense situations.

Requirements: Minimum age is 18 years old.  Prior coaching experience is preferred, but not required. This volunteer assignment requires a criminal background check.

Physical Demands: Assignment may require lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible weightsconstantly.

Environmental Conditions: Volunteer work is conducted either inside or outside depending on the sport. Games conducted outside are subject to inclement weather.

Metroport Teen Court Judge
Southlake Town Hall

Time: Volunteer Judges are required to volunteer two or three Tuesday nights per year from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.(dates and times are pre-scheduled).

Description: Volunteers will sit as Judges during Teen Court trials.

Qualifications:Volunteers must be able to communicate effectively with teens and must feel comfortable with objections and sensitive material.

Requirements: Volunteers must be a State Licensed and Practicing Attorneys. Minimum age is 25 years old.  A completed criminal background check and training session is required prior to volunteering.

Physical Demands: Assignment may require lifting up to five pounds occasionally or negligible weights frequently and volunteers may be required to sit, stand, stoop, bend, squat, push and pull.

Environmental Conditions: Volunteer work is conducted inside in an office or courtroom environment.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Volunteer
Southlake Department of Public Safety - Fire Services

Location: Assignment location will vary depending upon the event. 
 

Time: Assignment time for volunteers will vary depending upon the event.

Description: CERT Volunteers will assist during large emergency events and disasters. A CERT Volunteer is part of a group of organized disaster workers prepared through specialized training to provide assistance in the community in the event of an emergency or disaster.

Qualifications: Volunteers must be friendly and dependable, able to readily learn assigned tasks, able to follow oral and written directions as part of an organized command structure, and able to communicate effectively.

Requirements: Minimum age is 18 years old.  Volunteers must participate and complete a nine week CERT training course prior to volunteering. This volunteer position requires a criminal background check.

Physical Demands: Assignment may require lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible weights constantly and volunteers must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend, squat, push and pull. Volunteer may also be required to work in hazardous situations.

Environmental Conditions: Volunteer work is conducted either inside or outside and volunteers may be subject to inclement weather.

Citizens on Patrol (COPS)Volunteer
Southlake Department of Public Safety - Police Services

Location: Assignment location will vary depending upon the event.

Time: Assignment time for volunteers will vary depending upon the event.

Description: COPS Volunteers patrol neighborhoods, business areas and parks and report any suspicious or criminal activities. Volunteers will assist Police Services with traffic control, surveillance details, roadside assistance, house watch checks and other functions as assigned.

Qualifications: Volunteers must be friendly and dependable, able to readily learn assigned tasks, able to follow oral and written directions as part of an organized command structure, and able to communicate effectively.

Requirements: Minimum age is 18 years old and must have a valid Texas Drivers License.Volunteers must participate and complete the DPS Citizens Academy prior to volunteering. This volunteer position requires a criminal background check.

Physical Demands: Assignment may require lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible weights constantly and volunteers must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend, squat, push and pull. Volunteer may also be required to work in hazardous situations.

Environmental Conditions: Volunteer work is conducted either inside or outside and volunteers may be subject to inclement weather.

Mounted Patrol Volunteer
Southlake Department of Public Safety - Police Services

Location: Trails at Lake Grapevine and special events.

Time: Assignment time for volunteers will vary depending upon the assignment and event.

Description: Mounted Patrol Volunteers assist in emergency operations especially those in park and lake areas accessible only by horseback. Volunteers also participate in special events.

Qualifications: Volunteers must be friendly and dependable, able to readily learn assigned tasks, able to follow oral and written directions as part of an organized command structure, and able to communicate effectively.

Requirements: Minimum age is 18 years old and must have a valid Texas Drivers License.  This volunteer position requires a criminal background check. Volunteers must provide their own horse and tack gear and train both with and without their mount.

Physical Demands: Assignment requires lifting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible weights constantly and volunteers must be able to sit, stand, stoop, bend, squat, push and pull. Volunteer may also be required to work in hazardous situations.

Environmental Conditions: Volunteer work is conducted either inside or outside and volunteers may be subject to inclement weather.

Fire RehabVolunteer
Southlake Department of Public Safety - Fire Services
DPS West Station - 2100 W. Southlake Blvd.

Location: Initial response location is the DPS West facility. Assignment location will vary depending upon the event.

Time: Assignment time for volunteers will vary depending upon the event. Volunteers will be placed on a rotating "on-call" schedule.

Description: Fire Rehab Volunteers respond to fire emergency scenes or training exercises to ensure that the physical condition of personnel does not deteriorate to a point that affects the operation. Rehab volunteers respond in a specialized vehicle that contains drinks and supplies needed to keep first responders at a fully functional level.

Qualifications: Volunteers must be friendly and dependable, able to readily learn assigned tasks, able to follow oral and writtendirections as part of an organized command structure and able to communicate effectively.

Requirements: Minimum age is 18 years old.Volunteers must participate and complete the DPS Citizens Academy prior to volunteering. This volunteer position requires a criminal background check.
